Department of Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to the total care of the patient before, during and after surgery. Anaesthesiologist are also experts in resuscitation, pain management and Intensive care. This department forms a key link between surgical team and patients undergoing surgical procedures. Our department of anaesthesia provides anaesthesia and perioperative medical care for a wide range of elective and emergency complex surgical patients. Highly skilled anaesthetists are available 24 hrs. a day which deal all kinds of pain and surgeries.

• Your anesthesiologist will meet with you in pre-op and will discuss your anesthesia care plan. The anesthesiologist remains with patients for the entire surgical time; from the moment the patient enters the operating room until the patient is stable in the recovery room.
• The two most common types of anesthesia used at Dhawan Hospital are “general” and “regional” anesthesia. The risks, benefits, and answers to any of your questions can be discussed with the anesthesiologist.
• General anesthesia is when you are completely asleep during your procedure. A breathing tube is placed to help you breath.
• Regional anesthesia is the type of anesthesia where a portion of the patient’s body is rendered insensitive or numb to the stimuli of surgery.
• Although some patients prefer to be awake during the surgical procedure, most prefer to receive a sedative and sleep for the entire surgical procedure. You will be able to discuss these options with both the anesthesiologist and your surgeon prior to your surgical procedure.
• With all forms of anesthesia, a patient will feel minimal, if any pain during the surgical procedure, and the anesthesia will take a while to wear off. It is recommended that you have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours after anesthesia due to occasional periods of decreased awareness.
